Menopause & Natural Hormones

Natural Hormones & Menopause

menopause and natural hormones
Women in the pre-menopause and menopause years experience a variety of symptoms from almost no changes to a long list of symptoms including abnormal bleeding, hot flashes, night sweets, insomnia, migraine headaches, mood changes, anxiety, depression, fatigues, decreased memory, loss of sexual desires, vaginal dryness, and pain with intercourse, urinary incontinence and urgency, bone-loss and bone pain.

Early consultation with your gynecologist can assist in improving your quality of life and help to avoid possible long-term health deterioration (that is, bone-loss).

Variety of hormonal (systemic or local) and non-hormonal modalities are available to assist you with the transition into your new stage of life.

In the wake of the recent news about the risks of estrogen/progestin hormone replacement therapy (HRT), many women are looking to so-called "natural" or "bioidentical" hormone preparations in the hope of finding a safer alternative to the synthetic hormones contained in conventional regimens. "Natural" may refer to hormones made from natural substances; "natural" or "bioidentical" may also refer to hormones that match those in the human body. Manufacturers of these alternative products have leaped into the fray to promote their hormone preparations as better and safer than HRT.

Menopause and Natural Hormones is about safety, individuality, bio-identical hormones, and discovering your optimal doses. A natural hormone is a hormone that is biochemically and molecularly identical to the human hormone and is derived from a plant and it is defined by their chemical structure not by their source. Natural hormones are converted in a laboratory from diosgenin extracted from wild yam and beta-sitosterol extracted from soybeans. Hormones that can be converted from wild yam and soybeans are estrone, estriol, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA (also known as dehydroepiandrosterone).

Natural estrogen and progesterone formulations are made from a physician's prescription in a compounding pharmacy (a pharmacy that prepare drugs from separate ingredients) in the form that is best suited for the patient. Different proportions of estrogens and progesterone can be compounded by the pharmacist, which allows the physician to individualize hormone supplementation treatments.
