VBAC is known as vaginal birth after delivery. It simply refers to women who have undergone Cesarean sections and are wondering whether or not they can or should perform vaginal birth on their next pregnancy.
Many pregnant mothers wonder if it’s worth trying VBAC for their next child. They often feel as if it’s not safe or it’s not recommended. However, is it considered very safe and the benefits make it worthwhile.
If a mother decides to try VBAC, then they will undergo what is called a Trial of Labor period in which VBAC is attempted, but if the child shows any signs of distress a C-Section will have to be performed. It is estimated that as many as 4 out of 10 women who engage in the trial of labor period must undergo C-Section.
Vaginal birth is the most natural form of childbirth. As such, there are many benefits why VBAC would be worth trying:
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) have acknowledged the greatest risk of VBAC is the risk of uterine rupture. However, they have found that this risk is for those who have had a previous cesarean with a low transverse incision. The risk of uterine rupture in this case is roughly a 1 in 500 chance of occurring.
VBAC is ultimately a personal choice to undergo, provided that the reasons for C-Section for your first pregnancy are taken into account.
