What Exactly is Premenstrual Syndrome?

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) describes a wide range of discomforts that occur for a day and up to a week before a woman’s period. Symptoms usually appear in a variety of forms, which include:

•Tender breasts
•Food cravings
•Fatigue
•Irritability
•Depression

Most symptoms will recur in predictable patterns, but the physical and emotional changes might vary from slightly to intense. For some women, the physical and emotional stresses are severe enough to affect their daily routines. Regardless of the intensity of symptoms they generally disappear within four days of the start of the menstrual period for most women.

It is estimated that on average 3 of every 4 menstruating women have experienced some form of premenstrual syndrome.
